SEPTEMBER MOM OF THE MONTH: MEET SAMANTHA DURHAM

Tell us about your family?

I am married to my husband of 5 years, Corey. Together we have two boys Drake (2 years) and Drew (10 months). I am a former high school math teacher turned stay at home mom. My husband works as a firefighter for the city.

◦ Why is FIT4MOM important to you?

In short, COMMUNITY.

Being a stay at home mom, the walls were kind of closing in a little and I really was craving socialization with other moms. Not to mention, I really wanted my boys to have some interaction with little kids too. I saw FIT4MOM Stroller Strides on social media and thought it would be a great way for us to get out of the house. Not only has it provided my family with just that but we also have developed a routine, made new friends, and it has made me feel stronger as a mom.

◦ What do you remember about your first FIT4MOM class?

I was a little nervous going to my first class because I didn’t know what to expect and because I didn’t know anyone. Yet, I remember Audrey & Joy making me feel SO welcome. I felt like I was a part of the group from day one. I was really impressed with how the instructor engaged with the kids while we were exercising. It made me feel like my kids were content and I could enjoy a workout.

◦ What was your childhood ambition?:

I was very interested in cooking. Being a chef was something that always appealed to me. I used to love watching the cooking channel. Ironically enough, my husband does all the cooking now and I don’t even know what channel the cooking shows are on because #momlife

◦ What are 3 of your favorite things?:

Dr.Pepper, fishing, quiet time + coffee

◦ What is one of your 2023 goals for YOU this year?:

I want to lose that last little bit of baby weight!

◦ What has being a mom taught you?

Sacrifice & respect. I now realize and appreciate how much hard work my mom and all other moms have devoted to raising their children. It's hard work.

◦ Advice for first time moms?

It's important to check in with other moms to get advice & tips, but don’t let that dictate your feelings and role as a mom. It can be VERY overwhelming to see how different moms do things and it can make you feel inferior and even judged sometimes. But, remember that parenting is not a competition. Every mom (that I know) is doing the best she can to raise her children in the way she thinks is best. You will be great for your little one!

◦ You have 4 hrs of FREE babysitting, what would you do with your time?

I would get a massage and then go home and take a nap.

◦ Favorite spot to eat in Texarkana?

Ironwood Grill

◦ What is a fun fact that many may not know about you?

I sing on the praise team at church and occasionally fill in on the piano. I can play the guitar too!

◦ If someone was thinking about attending a FIT4MOM class or joining, what would you tell them?

Do it! Especially with the first class being free, you really have nothing to lose. Also, if you're nervous how your kid(s) will behave, don't let that be the reason you don’t come. If they throw a fit, it's okay. We all get it!

◦ Favorite thing to do as a family?

Evening golf cart rides in the river bottoms, especially in the fall.
